Red Cedar is varnished but not stained to finish the exterior of our 100% solid cedar chests. Red cedar is very beautiful, and makes a fine cedar chest, but the wood is not suited for larger furniture pieces.
The grain of red cedar is very fine and even, but it is strongly marbled throughout with dark red knots and reddish-white sapwood. This creates dramatic highlights that run throughout. Red Cedar is cut and harvested as a light red color, but darkens to dark reddish-brown with a bit of time and sunlight. This color change is substantial. Its species name is Juniperus Virginiana. Its Janka rating (hardness and resistance to scrapes, gouges and cuts) is 900.

Please note that cedar has significant variation in wood patterns that cannot be well represented in a wood sample.
