Quarter Sawn Red Oak Harmony Cedar Chest Details
Each chest is created with 100% solid quarter sawn red oak on the front, top and sides. The bottom and rear panels are finished with solid red cedar. This rear cedar panel generally faces the wall or bed. A 'four sided' option in oak is also available (see below under 'Cedar Chest Customization').
The exterior wood is finished to preserve and protect the chest. The interior wood is left unfinished, making the opening of your cedar chest a very pleasurable experience. Cedar adds a sweet, pleasant scent to any room.

Quarter Sawn Red Oak Characteristics
Quarter sawn red oak is cut against the grain to create a more varied appearance and texture.
Red Oak is a solid, sturdy wood that is uniform in texture and color. Its grain is relatively large, and takes on colored stain quite well. With age, its color will change take on minor amber tones. This is a minor change in color. Its species name is Quercus Rubra. Its Janka rating (hardness and resistance to scrapes, gouges and cuts) is 1260.

Safety Features
Our cedar chests include twin safety latches, which lock in place to hold open the lid. This allows for easier access to the interior of the chest. (Our small and medium chests require only one latch).
Our chests are crafted without a lock, and are thus created to be child-safe. However, you may also choose to add a lock to your new chest. This optional lock cannot be turned without a key, ensuring that the cedar chest cannot be accidentally locked from the inside.
Shipping and Packaging
Small, medium and large chests ship out in around 10-16 days. Extra large and jumbo chests ship out in around 12-18 days. Please allow 2-6 additional days for delivery by UPS.
Twin, queen and king sized chests ship out in around 3-4 weeks (larger chests are more challenging to build). Please allow an additional 1-3 weeks for delivery. These chests are shipped via curbside delivery with liftgate.
9 times out of 10, our cedar chests are completed and delivered within this timeframe. However, true craftsmanship cannot be rushed -- sometimes a piece just takes a bit longer. Please let us know if there is an important holiday or event we should be aware of when you place your order, and we will do our best to get it there on time.

Cedar Chest Customization
We offer several options to customize your cedar chest.
Cedar Chest Lock: See details above under 'safety features'.
Cedar Chest Trays: Our cedar chest trays are created from solid unfinished red cedar. They ride gently upon a pair of cedar rails built into the interior (click here for a photo), and lift out easily to reveal the interior. Our chest trays are intended to hold smaller, loose items while the main compartment of the chest holds larger items.
Our cedar trays are available in a variety of sizes, and are built to the depth of the chest. The craftsman may also modify the length if necessary. For example, two 25" trays cannot fit inside of a 48" long chest because the walls of the chest are 3/4" wide, the overhang is another 1/2" to 3/4", and the exterior is 2" shorter than the trays.
Chest Casters: Casters allow your chest to roll along the ground, which is a useful feature for our larger cedar chests. The casters are installed prior to shipping, but are removed to prevent damage -- you need to 'pop them in' when the chest arrives . Casters can be set to one of two heights, suitable for use on a carpeted floor or a hardwood floor. Please select the appropriate caster height for the room you will be placing the cedar chest in. Click here for a photo of a caster installed on the bottom of a hope chest.
Finished Rear Panel: Our cedar chests are made with solid quarter sawn red oak hardwood on the front, top and side panels. The bottom and rear of the chest are finished with red cedar. The rear panel generally faces a wall or bed.
When you upgrade to a finished rear panel, the back of the chest is finished with solid quarter sawn red oak to match the rest of the chest. Chests with a finished rear panel are slightly deeper than standard cedar chests.
Chest Interior:
Standard Cedar Lined Chest. Our oak harmony cedar chests come standard with cedar on all four interior walls, and also the bottom of the chest.
Chest With No Cedar Lining. We can also create a chest without this interior lining. The rear and bottom panel panel will still be finished with cedar, but the other three interior panels (front and sides) will be quarter sawn red oak. There is no real benefit to this option aside from cost savings.
Chest With No Cedar Lining, Replace Cedar Panels With Poplar. This option allows you to have a chest with no cedar in it. We will replace the red cedar rear and bottom panels with poplar. This chest interior will have poplar on the rear and bottom wall of the chest, and quarter sawn red oak on the sides and front of the chest. Poplar is a bit more expensive than cedar, but is a good replacement in terms of strength and durability. We recommend this option for people with cedar allergies.
Padded Chest: Our cedar chests are strong enough to double as a seat (assuming normal use), either by a window or as an extra place to sit in your living room. Our padded chest option makes this a bit more comfortable.
This option consists of a rail to hold the cushion in place, and a cushion in your choice of color. Click here for a photo, shown on a harmony cedar chest.
The cushion is handmade by the wives and daughters of our Amish chestmakers, who are experienced in hand sewing and making quilts. The inner padding is made from soft foam. Custom colors are also available (if you're willing to wait a week or two for the cloth samples), these colors depend on locally available cloth materials and vary seasonally.
Custom Sized Chests
We can also create custom sized chests to nearly any size, including chests up to 80" in length. The price will be roughly proportional to the amount of materials needed to create the chest.
Chests larger than around 50" x 22" x 22" are too large for UPS, and will need to ship via freight service or 'inside the home delivery and setup'.
