historyA Brief History

Rick Hansen (Learn more about Rick) started Harmony Cedar with the help of his Amish neighbors who needed assistance getting their handcrafted cedar chests to market. Rick's family has been in southeast Minnesota farming for generations in an area where keeping your word and being a good neighbor are important virtues. He inherited the family farm where his mother grew up in 1996.

Rick launched the business in 2001 and began by selling to friends and family who purchased cedar chests for wedding presents, Christmas gifts, and birthdays. Since then we have continually expanded our chest lines by adding new styles, sizes and hardwoods that proved to be popular (such as the new Florenceville, Heritage and Sleigh style chests, very large 72" chests, and locally harvested Walnut). We have sold hundreds of chests over the years.

We are nationally recognized for our custom built furniture and tables designed to perfectly match your dining room style and size. Our success means we now work with several Amish families in southeastern Minnesota to build and deliver our quality, durable furniture. The sale of our handcrafted furniture benefit the rural, sustainable economy by providing work for craftsmen, small delivery companies, local sawmills, and local farmers with stands of beautiful hardwoods. Our products are 100% American Made.

At Harmony Cedar, we believe environmental stewardship is important. Locally grown and harvested native trees require time, patience and stewardship for high quality. Deer nibble the trees and then rub their antlers on the larger young trees. We work to protect the trees by tubing, trimming and managing our woods. Our fields of farmland are enrolled into the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and planted with native prairie and to encourage wildlife habitat. We planted over 5,500 trees on former crop land. The mix is 50% hardwoods (Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, and Walnut) and 50% softwood Pines. The trees help provide wildlife cover, prevent erosion on hills and slopes, improve water quality, and help to replenish the forests native to the Upper Midwest. We continue to remove invasive species and manage our farms to enhance the environment.

We also believe in supporting our community and have donated furniture to children's cancer research, domestic abuse prevention projects, and soil and water conservation. So, when you place an order with us, you are not just getting the finest furniture, you are truly supporting a community of farms and fields, friends and families.
