Guide to Cedar Chests

We can accommodate most custom requests that do not change the overall character of the design, or compromise its strength and integrity.

Custom sized chests are priced based on the cost of materials, there is no custom design fee. We can create a chest up to 80" in length in hardwood, or up to 50" in length in 100% solid cedar.

We can also make simple modifications to the design: removing the legs from a chest, replacing the handles with metal hardware, etc.

Our most popular chest sizes are large and extra large.

All of our chest measurements are exterior measurements. To determine the interior storage capacity of a chest, a simple rule of thumb is to subtract 2-4" from the length, 2-4" from the depth and 4-8" from the height. (The amount to subtract varies, depending on the style and size of the chest. Dowry chests stand higher off the ground than blanket chests, for example ... and harmony chest lids are thicker than shaker chest lids).

Examples

• A 24" long x 12" wide x 14" high classic chest has around 18" x 9" x 11" of interior space available. This is around 1800 cubic inches.
• A 30" long x 14" wide x 16" high classic chest has around 24" x 11" x 13" of interior space available. This is around 3400 cubic inches.
• A 36" long x 16" wide x 18" high classic chest has around 30" x 13" x 15" of interior space available. This is around 5900 cubic inches.
• A 42" long x 18" wide x 20" high classic chest has around 36" x 15" x 17" of interior space available. This is around 9200 cubic inches.
• A 46" long x 20" wide x 22" high classic chest has around 40" x 17" x 19" of interior space available. This is around 12900 cubic inches.

(Please not that these are just estimates. To provide accurate interior measurements we would need to discuss the details of the specific chest you're interested in with the craftsman. There are simply too many variables with all of the styles, sizes and options we have available).

We have eight styles of cedar chest: Blanket, Classic, Dowry, Harmony, Hope, Lancaster, Mission, Florenceville, Sleigh, Heritage, and Shaker. We also have miniature jewelry boxes available.

All of our chests are cedar lined, and arrive fully assembled – there is no installation necessary.

Several of our styles are available in solid cedar. The options on these chests are a bit different, as cedar is a softer wood that cannot support the same weight as oak or cherry.
